[eat] Wichita’s Best Burritos

Good burritos aren’t hard to find in the ICT. In fact, there are so many varieties available that it’s nearly impossible to go wrong. Wichita is home to some amazing Mexican eateries. Fortunately, they all serve some delicious burritos. Here are a few of my favorites:
1) Rene’s Mexican Restaurant, Mexican Food, and Taco Mexican have some of the most authentic Mexican fast food available in Wichita.  All of these restaurants are owned by the same person and offer the same items at each restaurant. In my opinion, the Colorado is …

[primp] Spray Tanning

I abhor the sun. I mean, I give it props for lighting the world and everything, but its cancer-causing rays really bother me. I do enough damage to my body on my own, thank you very much, I don’t need any help from an ever-present orb in the sky. As a former lifeguard, my 25-year-old skin has already begun to show the effects of two decades of sun (and, yes, tanning-bed) worshipping. I’ve already had a much- too-close-for-comfort call with an itty-bitty place on my back; …

Recently, my daughter’s preschool class took a field trip to Tanganyika Wildlife Park. I had heard about the interactive exhibits and unusual animals featured there, so I was pretty excited to join this group of teeny pre-K explorers.

[eat] Lunch with Liz: Bella Luna

Another one of my favorite Wichita restaurants would have to be Bella Luna. It is among many Mediterranean inspired joints that this city has to offer, with its own unique twist.
In my few years of residing in Wichita, Bella Luna has been a “go-to” place for many occasions. It’s a great place to get together for lunch with co-workers or friends, somewhere to grab an after-work drink special, or even celebrate a special occasion. I recently dined at Bella Luna for lunch and dinner, both equally as good for different reasons.
My …

[do] Chapin Park is Going to the Dogs

Winter always seems to drag on. That first dip in temperature always takes the wind out of my sails. And the stir-craziness that days upon days of cold, gray weather turns me into a pasty white Hulk. I know I’m not the only one, too. By January, that 90-pound mess that I call Yellow Dog starts giving me a dejected look like, “Is it going to be like this forever?”
Now that spring has arrived, Wichitans of the two- and four-legged variety alike are ready to soak up the sunshine – …

[do] Horseback Riding in Wichita

I’m going to assume that you, like countless others, have a childhood regret. You were mean to your sister, gave up piano lessons, didn’t pay attention in algebra, quit baseball or fell out of touch with a dear friend. Aside from all of the above, I regret giving up the saddle.

[shop] The Dos and Don’ts of Mother’s Day Gifts

As Mother’s Day approaches, there is still time to get your mom a gift. A good gift. But just as the Christmas Eve shoppers know, the selection of thoughtful, decent gifts starts to dwindle quickly, so don’t wait until Sunday morning to make your selection. To help you out, I’ve compiled a list of the top five things NOT to get your mom/wife on Mother’s Day.
1. Exercise DVDs or equipment – Unless Mom has been dropping hints about absolutely wanting the kettlebells she’s seen on “The Biggest Loser” …

[do] Wright Here in Wichita: The Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright

If you find yourself feeling artsy and suddenly have the urge to start traveling, write poetry, and study architecture, there’s no need to drop a wad of cash, fly to Europe, and start living out of a backpack. Simply venture to the east side of Wichita, and take in the beauty of two amazing projects from one of America’s greatest architects, Frank Lloyd Wright.
The first building is a residence in the College Hill neighborhood. Located at 255 N. Roosevelt, the Allen-Lambe house was designed in 1915 and occupied …

[eat] Wichita’s Best Japanese Grills

When I think of Japanese grills, my mind instantly goes to that scene from The Office where Andy takes Michael to Benihana to cheer him up. Michael complains that nothing the chef is doing is making him feel better and Andy says, “Wait for the onion.” Whether it’s the onion volcano, the shrimp-catching contest, or the banter between the chef and the table, there are plenty of things at these grills to make a person happy, even before the food comes. Here are a couple of my favorite traditional grill …

[meet] Earnest Alexander from Youth Horizons

One of the great things about writing for verb [ICT] is meeting new people. Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing one of the most inspirational men in Wichita, Earnest Alexander. Earnest is the co-founder of Youth Horizons, an organization serving to mentor at-risk youth.
When I arrived at the Youth Horizons office on east Douglas, I was greeted by warm staff members who led me to the office Earnest shares with his longtime assistant, Willa Gale. Willa, who describes herself as Earnest’s biggest fan, was excited …

[do] Mark the Greensburg Tornado Anniversary

On May 4, 2007, the farming town of Greensburg, Kansas was devastated when a 1.7-mile-wide, F5 tornado tore through the town. On the same night, tornadoes were reported in Oklahoma, Colorado, and South Dakota, but the Greensburg tornado was by far the worst, consuming 95 percent of the town and taking 11 lives. This weekend, the town will mark the three-year anniversary with a variety of events and community activities designed to showcase the rebirth of Greensburg, including a benefit concert by country legend George Jones.

[eat] Mike’s Wine Dive: The Food

Score another point for great places to go in College Hill. Thanks to my fabulous friend Nicole, I went on a gastronomical adventure for lunch at Mike’s Wine Dive. Located at Douglas and Oliver, it has a simple charm that is woven throughout the look of the restaurant, the lunch and dinner menu, and, of course, the wine menu.
Because I went for lunch I was not able to partake in any wine but I did not leave disappointed – the food was downright delicious. My lunch buddies …

[help] HIV/AIDS Resources in Wichita

This is the first article I’ve written that has, literally, turned heads – even before it was published.
As I type, it’s a two-and-a-half-sentence blurb in an untitled Word document. How have I accomplished this amazing feat of soliciting public interest so quickly? I can’t be sure, but the laptop screen full of “AIDS Group Therapy” “AIDS Counseling” and “Treatment for Your HIV/AIDS” tabs might have something to do with it.
While sitting in a café, one out of every three guests to pass my table turns around to get a good …
