[eat] Lunch with Liz: DK Kitchen

Editor’s Note: Several hours after publishing this article, we learned DK Kitchen is now closed. We hope we haven’t become the death knell for Wichita restaurants.
Summer time! It means quite a few things to people, depending where you are in your life journey: school vacation, time for grilling out, and, if you’re me, it means beer and wine on the patio. I’m taking a little summer vacation from Tanya Tandoc’s recommendations and venturing to some restaurants that weren’t on her “favorited” list.
Recently a reader, Owen Strawn, suggested I check out …

[do] Composting in the City: A How-To Guide

As I ambled down the road that led from Clueless Consumer to Totally Eco Savvy I was inspired to try organic cooking, energy efficient light bulbs, locally grown groceries and (of course) recycling. These are pretty standard “Green” enterprises that can be practiced without your friends thinking you’ve gone crazy. My last project, not so much. My friends are giving me funny looks because my new pursuit sounds like something totally out of place in the city, but I don’t care. I’ve seen it work magic in my life, and …

[do] Summer Family Fun in Wichita

When the bell rang on the last day of school, my third-grader announced, “Let the 3-month Wii marathon begin!” If he had his way, this is exactly how the summer would be spent: endless hours playing video games in his underwear with short breaks to eat Cheetos and nap between levels. As a parent, I know my job is to break up the monotony of summer, so I’ll give him a few days to hang out in his PJs, but then it’s time to wipe the Cheeto dust …

[do] Storm Chasing in Wichita: May 10

The May 10 storm had been forecasted a full week ahead. The forecast for severe weather remained fairly constant for Central Kansas and moved into northern Oklahoma. A few days before the storm, the National Weather Service had Sedgwick County under a very significant hazard assessment. I’ve heard that when the threat assessment gets to the highest level, Emergency Management is activated for an impending disaster. That Monday was the first time in my memory that a day of Riverfest had ever been cancelled.

[do] How to Plan a Successful Float Trip

While the “staycation” has gone out of vogue, the idea of an inexpensive getaway is always appealing. To this end, I bring you the float trip – a chance to escape from real life, unplug your electronic gadgets, and pretend you’re on a backwoods episode of “Man vs. Wild” for a weekend – only with booze and inner tubes. You know, really roughing it, American style! There are many places within a few hours’ driving distance of ICT that will take a very modest fee for plopping you …

[nest] Great Car Repair Shops in Wichita

I’m convinced that living life without a car would be very difficult or impossible for me. I need my car. It takes me anywhere I need or want to go. It’s reliable. However, there are two things that keep it in working order: gasoline and maintenance. The only unpleasant aspect that comes with owning a car is vehicle maintenance and repairs. It can get costly. Fortunately, there are several affordable car maintenance centers here in Wichita that do quality work.

Chris’ Mobile Auto Service (1905 S. Lulu St.) offers quality work …

[listen] Erik Mallory

The singer-songwriter often is a man with a guitar with a tale to tell and of course a song to sing. It’s an intimate thing; one man on stage, nowhere to hide. The audience can look him in the eye and see inside. The music is gritty and raw. It ain’t always pretty, but it’s from the heart. Let me introduce Erik Mallory.
You started playing guitar in your mid-20s; what prompted you to want to learn?
I spent my early 20s more than a little …

[eat] Lunch with Liz: Cocoa Dolce

This week, I headed to another spot that some might see as a stretch to be called a lunch spot, but the column title is mainly all about the alliteration. I am straying a bit away from Tanya Tandoc’s list to take you to a certain “sweet” place. I have ventured to Cocoa Dolce, located in Bradley Fair, twice this past month and haven’t been let down either time.
I have to admit, I only made it out to Cocoa Dolce at its former location. But now that it’s in Bradley …

[eat] Rediscovering Barn’rds

A while back, Dani wrote an article about unforgettable Wichita food. Well, is it possible to say that for a long time, I forgot about one of these unforgettable places? Well, I’m saying it, and the place I’m talking about is Barn’rds.
A good portion of my childhood and teenage dining out experiences, especially for lunch, took place at this unassuming little restaurant on North Woodlawn. I would look forward to ordering my usual, the regular roast beef sandwich with a side of delicious, crispy fries. I would grab a soda …

[nest] Mr. Midwest Goes Green, Pt. 1

The man you see pictured is quite the up and comer about Wichita. He graduated college a little over a year ago and has since worked his way up the social food chain to become a recognizable face in College Hill. Have you been to the cozy little Il Vicino that faces Douglas? Have you sat at the stretch bar on a cold night or taken your salad and wine to the patio on a warm spring day? A lot of Wichitans have, and many of them know this …

[eat] Cupcakes, Anyone?

It’s hard to say when my love affair with cupcakes began, but that love is real and it’s strong. Every year, someone makes my favorite Funfetti cupcakes for my birthday. That someone is usually my mom, but this year my mom and my friends Steph and Jen also made some. Three sets of cupcakes made for the perfect start to my 28th year. My friends know me well and know that my happy place is located wherever there are cupcakes.
Just when I thought life couldn’t get better, recently my friend …
