[meet] Ask verb: Mmm, Thanksgiving

Each week, the verb [ICT] team will answer your burning (or not-so-burning) questions. Is there something you’d like to know about us? E-mail the editors or leave a comment.
This week, we asked the verb staff team to tell us about their favorite (and least favorite) Thanksgiving dishes.
My favorite dish is my mother-in-law’s sweet potato casserole. There are no marshmallows or red hots involved and it’s sinfully delicious with some hot and heavy pecans and butter, Paula Deen style. My least favorite dish is anything that contains Jello. …

[eat] How to Make the Perfect Turkey

When I first moved to Kansas five years ago, I decided to impress my then-boyfriend’s family with a homecooked holiday dinner, complete with a turkey and all of the trimmings. While I’ve always been a relatively adept cook, this seemed like a serious challenge and something that I should probably train for. Yes, I said train.
Armed with Google, Epicurious.com and a stack of cookbooks, I researched and tested and prototyped and came up with The Perfect Turkey Recipe.
After spending hours in the kitchen, I’m usually not as enthusiastic about what …

[primp] When to Splurge (and Save) on Makeup

O, makeup. How do I love yet resent thee? For most women, cosmetics are a bane and a blessing. They can be employed to play up your best features and mask your perceived flaws. But each day is like painting the Sistine Chapel just to wash it off at the end of the day.
Not all cosmetics are created equally. I’ll admit, I practically go into heat when I’m at the MAC counter. All the pigments all the weights and sheens and lusters. Yes, vanity is a sin. But so is …

[do] Wichita Center for the Arts

It’s no secret that Wichita is an arts town, and that’s why I love it.
There are a number of all-encompassing 0rganizations that promote creative Wichitans in some capacity and give them a chance to showcase their talent, and The Wichita Center for the Arts is one of my favorites.
Between the Center Theatre, the Mary R. Koch School of Visual Arts, and the Gallery, there is something for every artistic taste. Even if you’re merely an arts appreciator, the center has numerous volunteer opportunities.
Ready to learn how to make glass …

[listen] Adult Rock Band

Cheering fans, colored lights and rock music. This was the scene of my Friday night, not at the Cotillion or the Coliseum, but in the basement of Senseney Music. What brought me there was the first ever performance by the students of the Adult Rock Band class.
Walking in, my expectations were immediately exceeded. There was a pretty large crowd and there seemed to be a lot of excitement. I took a seat in the front row and waited for the show to begin.
Before I tell you about the performance, …

[drink] Warm Up With a Winter Beer

I’ve only recently become acquainted with the concept of winter beers. Until this point, enjoying a beer meant coming home from a long day and popping open a cold one. Okay, I’ve never actually said the phrase “popping open a cold one” until now, but I think you get my point. Beer was a refreshing treat I gave myself after a hot day of working in the sun (or sitting at my desk all day to be more accurate).
I digress. When I heard about winter beer, I could not wrap …

[meet] The Hipster Field Journal

Like the average 20-year-old girl, I crush on a new guy about every week. Some carry over from week to week, but for the most part I like to keep it trendy. However, for the last few months I started noticing a trend in my flavors of the week. Suddenly, boys with thick-rimmed glasses and circa-1968 Jagger haircuts were irresistible to me. As I began to research this PoMo subculture, I began to see it as a full-on revolution in my generation: The Hipster Movement.
So, if this nonsense is …

[do] Take a Shot of Espresso Theater

If Thirsty Thursdays aren’t your thing, Mead’s Corner has an alternative activity geared toward creative types.
Espresso Theatre is a free open mic night with a thespian twist. It’s held at Mead’s on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m with Dana Ellison serving as the “Mistress of Ceremonies.”
Both performers and spectators are welcome to join in, and the open mic is not just limited to theater – participants can recite poetry, do a comedy routine, or sing.  While some aspiring thespians bring their own material, …

[do] Cheap Date: Down By the River

I know, I know… you’re wondering if I stepped outside or at least looked at the forecast this week. I did. It’s cold. It sucks. But even in the dead of winter, we are lucky enough to have some days when the sun is shining, the air is calm, and with a light coat, it’s not a bad day to get out and get some fresh air.
It’s easy to find cheap outside date options in the summer. Restaurants and bars open up the patios. …

[wear] Shoes: Rules for Dudes

You walk into an interview wearing a suit and tie, resume in hand, hoping that your appearance improves (or at least doesn’t detract) from your resume. You show up for your date, ready to impress with the right jeans and the ninth shirt you tried on. Want to sell the look? It’s all about the shoes.

[listen] One Good Jukebox – Lucky’s Bar

I love a good jukebox. This feeling started early in my life, with the jukebox at the local Big Cheese Pizza in Park City back in the ’80s/early ’90s. I would save up my quarters and jump at the chance to feed them to that wonderful machine, waiting eagerly to hear the latest New Kids or Paula Abdul hit.
The music changes, the prices get higher, records are replaced by CDs are replaced by digital music, but the love remains. This feature is designed to shed some light some of Wichita’s …

[eat] Exploring Wichita’s Mediterranean Scene

Until about five years ago, I’d never even heard of hummus, not to mention falafel or stuffed grape leaves. But the first time I set foot in a Mediterranean restaurant, I was hooked. You wouldn’t think of Wichita as the place to go for great Mediterranean food, but that’s just one of the many culinary secrets ICT has up its sleeve. There’s a plethora of quality hummus-slingers in the city. Here’s a guide to the local Mediterranean scene.

[watch] Ad Men at the Movies

Instead of mourning the end of another season of Mad Men, dip into the world of advertising with one of these feature-length films, available through Netflix or at your local video store.
Agency (1980) When I watched this recently, it was obvious that the DVD had been burned from an old and scratched film reel. It surprised me that the film had been watched so much that it was scratched, but then it does star Lee Majors in the lead role and he was pretty dreamy back in the day. The film …
