Take a drive around the west side and you’ll find dentists and orthodontists a-plenty. Now, we have a new hospital: Via Christi Hospital on W. St. Teresa.

Just past the Northwest YMCA, off 21st Street, Via Christi West sits on 120 acres surrounded by open pastures, overlooking the Mohr family barn, listed on the National Register Of Historic Places. The location will appeal to rural patients who don’t want to come to the “big city,” yet it’s still close enough to serve Wichita, Maize, Goddard, Clearwater and beyond.

Recently I had an opportunity to tour the new hospital. From an immediate aesthetic perspective, the first thing I noticed about the hospital was, well, it didn’t feel like a hospital. From the lobby to the third floor, large windows bathe the facility in sunshine, letting natural light fill the space. Using a new biophilic concept, the hospital is decorated with natural materials and better acoustics, all designed to make the patient feel more comfortable.

Currently the hospital has 68 private rooms and 4 ICU rooms, with plans to expand in the future. Inpatient amenities include nonstick flooring in the bathroom, high-tech beds that can automatically weigh patients, and hospital meals made to order within 30 minutes. One of the best features of the room has to be the multi-function remote control. In addition to classic functions like adjusting television volume and bed position, the new remotes open and close window blinds and with the push of a button, allow patients to call their nurse for specific reasons such as bathroom, pain medication, etc. Tying the remote features to smartphones allows nurses to prioritize patient needs.

In addition to a private OBGYN clinic, the hospital’s New Life Center boasts four labor and delivery suites, C-section room, mom/baby recovery rooms with queen-sized beds and a small, though well-equipped, pediatric NICU.

While touring Via Christi West, it’s easy to see a common-sense approach was taken in the design. The areas seem to flow seamlessly from one unit to the next, particularly around the emergency room. The emergency area is flanked on each side by full-service laboratory and imaging departments. Patients who require further testing or diagnostic studies need only walk a few feet rather than combing a large area or leaving the floor entirely.

My favorite part of the tour was the operating room. I’ve been inside a few on occasion as a patient and just outside a few as a worried mama, but I’ve never had a chance to stand inside one for the sole purpose of education. A member of the OR team was kind enough to take a few minutes out of his busy afternoon to share a few details with me.

Each operating room has its own intranet router, allowing vital patient information to be projected on large, high-definition monitors located throughout the room. This new technology is especially handy when a second opinion is needed. Information can be shared from one operating room to another. The surgeon giving the second opinion never has to scrub-out or leave the patient he’s working on. Other innovations include using LED lights to spotlight the surgical field rather than halogen lights, which often become hot enough to change the patient’s core temperature.

On the subject of lights, visiting surgeons will notice a green hue in the Via Christi West operating rooms. During surgery, a soft green light is used to bathe the room, cutting down on glare while allowing other operating room personnel to walk around without fear of bumping or tripping in a darkened room.

The new Via Christi on West St. Teresa is a nice mix of intimate care and high-tech innovation. The hospital is open to the public in August. For more information including directions, physicians and other detailed information, visit the Via Christi website.

One of the great things about writing for verb [ICT] is meeting new people. Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing one of the most inspirational men in Wichita, Earnest Alexander. Earnest is the co-founder of Youth Horizons, an organization serving to mentor at-risk youth.

When I arrived at the Youth Horizons office on east Douglas, I was greeted by warm staff members who led me to the office Earnest shares with his longtime assistant, Willa Gale. Willa, who describes herself as Earnest’s biggest fan, was excited to show me a recently published interview with the popular Christian publication World Magazine. It seems the good word is spreading about Earnest and how he managed to turn a Bible study coffee shop (originally The Dandelion Club) into an organization helping troubled teens through mentoring and residential care services.

When you meet Earnest in person, he is a commanding presence. Standing over 6 feet tall with a booming voice and contagious laugh, it’s easy to see why he’s such a popular minister and guest speaker. He’s engaging and eager to talk about his strong commitment to helping children reach their full potential in a safe, loving environment. Earnest discusses the purpose of Youth Horizons, “to break the cycle of fatherlessness.” Earnest was raised in Selma, Alabama, as one of seven children raised by a single mother. Though his mother worked hard to provide for her family, she couldn’t fill the void left by his father. Earnest mentions the cycle of fatherlessness many times during our interview.

As an internationally known gospel singer who traveled with the Singing Quakers and later performed in cities across Europe, Earnest could’ve pursued fame and fortune. Instead, he heeded the call to worship and mentoring. When I asked why he chose to call Wichita home, he said he felt like Wichita had chosen him. Since coming to Kansas to attend college many years ago, he said he always felt embraced by Wichita and how supportive the community has been. Earnest is trying to give back to the community by helping at-risk youth become productive members of society.

On the Youth Horizons website, the mission statement is very clear, “To empower children and families. . . to mentor and encourage at-risk youth. . . to create a nationwide awareness of the needs of at-risk youth.” In Wichita, Youth Horizons is seeking to accomplish that mission in three very specific ways.

Mentors: Open to boys and girls, this program matches children/teens with an adult mentor for personal one-on-one time.

Kinloch Price Boys Ranch: This residential program located in Valley Center accepts boys who need out-of-home placement.

Speaking Engagements: Youth Horizons works closely with Wichita-area schools, churches and civic organizations, giving presentations to educate the public about the specific needs of at-risk youth.

Earnest knows children are a product of their environment. At Youth Horizons, they help families grow and heal by offering parenting classes. This is particularly helpful for parents with a child living in the residential program who must be reintegrated back in the home. Earnest tells the story of a teen who excelled at the Kinloch ranch, only to fall back in to negative behavior patterns once he came home. The boy told him, “You fixed me, you didn’t fix who you sent me home to.”

Earnest said Youth Horizons is always looking for kind, responsible men and women who are willing to take training classes and pass the requirements needed to be successful mentors. Youth Horizons also accepts volunteers to work in their administrative offices, monetary donations, clothes and other supplies.

If you or someone you know would like more information about Youth Horizons, please call 316-262-8293 or visit their website.

My favorite outdoor activities are going on walks and having picnics. Going on a walk or a run in Sedgwick County Park is one of my favorite evening activities! – Maria Mannani

Once the weather starts to turn beautiful again, nothing beats sitting on the patio for Mort’s Monday 2-4-1 martinis! The after work crowd is especially lively. – Ashley Perkins

I love the EPIC games of horse that my daughter and I play at College Hill Park. We are both awful basketball shots, but it’s a time to spend time together and for her to ask questions about the minds of boys and all of the other drama that effects a freshman in high school. There are strict basketball court rules however. Much like Vegas, anything said at the court stays at the court. No topic is off limits and the overall winner for the day is Intergalactic Horse Champion until the next game. - Tim Kaul

I love people-watching at College Hill Park. All the dogs, tennis players, crazies, etc. come out of the woodwork. It’s great. – Steph Barnard

When we feel like being active, we like to head to Buffalo Park and play tennis. We usually always do at least one picnic in Riverside Park… and now we have bikes so we can picnic then bike through the park. For a slightly more indulgent activity, it is fun to find restaurants with patios and do lunch. Caffe Moderne and Uptown Bistro are our two favorites. There is nothing like sitting outside with the sun on your skin, having a drink and a bite to eat. – Jana Curl

Taking my pugs for a walk through Edgemoor Park with my boyfriend ranks pretty highly on my “Why Spring is Awesome” list. I’m eagerly anticipating the start of the farmers’ market season and garage sale-ing on Saturday mornings. And I have to second Ashley’s vote for 2-4-1 martinis on the patio at Mort’s. I love spring. – Shea Sylvia

Archery by far. There are several indoor and outdoor ranges, including the Diamond Archery Club near downtown, which features league play that’s inexpensive, with both spot and 3-D shoots. Add that to all the watering holes to choose from for bow-fishing, and you’ve got a wide variety of leisure and competition to get into. – Brandon McPeak

Now that spring is in the air, I will be looking forward to dining at restaurants that have patios. I can’t wait until it warms up even more to get my potted garden going! I also love just taking walks through the my neighborhood in College Hill. – Liz Sothman

Dreams of walks at Sedgwick County Park, pool crashing at various apartment complexes and playing tennis wherever we can find an open court have kept me warm all winter long. Now that it’s getting warmer and these dreams are about to become reality, if you need me I’ll be the cute one with the new pink racket. Fist pump! – Carly Holmes

Gardening. It’s time to plant potatoes if you haven’t done it already! Being able to get outside to exercise again, i.e., walking the paths around the Wichita parks or in my case, up around Cheney lake. Nerf dart tag with my son! Those velcro darts stick really well to lightweight fleece jackets, and the weather is just right for them. Win win! – Stephanie Cloud Seery

So tell us, what are YOUR favorite springtime activities?

Guest post by Ashley Bell

Visionary. Pioneer. Maverick. Chris Barnett is a breath of fresh air to the stale state of hip hop. His love of music started in 1986, when he was a three-year-old watching veterans like Whodini, Jam Master J and Run DMC.

“They inspired me to rap, make good music and tell vivid stories through punch lines and rhymes over dope beats,” Barnett said.

Barnett said he feels that hip hop music is currently suffering, because many artists are leaving out the substance.

“Instead of useful lyrics with meaning and purpose, the only thing that’s important is swag and a dance step,” Barnett said.

Focused on bringing meaning back to what was lost, Chris Barnett created Chris Barnett Presents: Esteem, an EP with 10 tracks dedicated to bringing the reverence back to hip hop. Along with a graphic designer, publicist and manager, Barnett devised and implemented his business and marketing plans for his music career. To keep initial overhead down, Barnett and his team decided the album would be offered for free on his website starting March 16.

“The reason it’s free is because people don’t buy music anymore but prefer to download. I’m not money hungry, I just want to get my name out there. You can’t buy respect,” Barnett said.

Barnett will be performing at RockStar Thursday at Rock Island Live (101 N. Rock Island) April 1.

“’Esteem’ is an alternative to the watered down music scene offering something for everyone. This is hip hop straight from the heart,” Barnett said.

Sometimes you find talented people in the place you least expect. For me recently, that place was Twitter. Due to a misspelling in a Twitter name, Chris Mann inadvertently gave me a shoutout that was meant for one of his friends. When I replied to let him know about the mistake, I discovered that not only is he a talented musician/song writer, he’s also a Wichita native.

A few days ago, I had the pleasure of talking to Chris on the phone as he drove through the desert on his way to a bachelor party in Phoenix. This is a man who deserves to blow off a little steam. In the span of one month, he started recording background vocals for season 2 of “Glee,” shot a video, performed live in L.A., and flew to Boston, where he put the finishing touches on his second album, tentatively titled Who I Am.

The album, written in London in a mere 10 days and produced by Grammy winner Martin Terefe, showcases what Chris calls his “passion for different styles of music.” He says it definitely has an “old-school George Michael-meets-Duffy vibe.” As a big fan of both George and Duffy, I’m pretty giddy to hear how he combines the two. No official release date has been given for the 14-song album, but Chris is hoping for late summer to early fall.

Though his busy career has him jetsetting across the globe, Chris endearingly calls Wichita “Tah-Town” and still considers it the one place he can get some true rest and relaxation. His parents and older sister, Becky, still live here, along with the three Springer Spaniels they have between them. When I asked Chris what he liked to do when he comes back to visit he immediately said, “Bella Luna. As long as I eat there 5-6 times while I’m home, I’m good.” He also likes Oeno Wine Bar and said he was impressed with the recent revitalization of Old Town in general.

So, how did a Kansas boy make it to California and go on tour with R&B poet/songwriter India.Arie? Growing up in Wichita, Chris showed an early interest in music and performed with Music Theatre Of Wichita. After he graduated from Southeast High, Chris made the decision to study classical music at WSU, defying the Mann family KU legacy, which stretches back to both grandparents.

Later, while studying opera at Vanderbilt University, he was cast in an Italian opera. Performing in Italy would be a defining moment in his life, for it was there he realized he’d lost his passion for opera and was being called in a new direction. In an eerie twist of fate, the woman he lived with in Italy, an avid Tarot card reader, revealed to him she also felt he should follow his heart back to the United States. Since then he’s lived in Nashville, New York and Los Angeles, building a pretty impressive portfolio along the way.

In addition to the India.Arie tour, Chris has toured with Tony-winning actress Idina Menzel, who makes a guest appearance on “Glee” this season. Chris also provided backup vocals for Avatar and is featured on the upcoming Letters To Juliette movie soundtrack, where he puts his own spin on the 1960s pop song “Quando Quando Quando.” Soon he’ll be going viral with a new video, a remake of the George Michael classic “I Want Your Sex.” His plan was to remake the video frame by frame, but decided to switch it up, though he assures me if you’re a fan of the 80s version, you’ll see a few subtle references to the original.

From the moment I started following Chris on Twitter (@iamchrismann), I was impressed by the attention he pays to his adoring fans. Embracing all forms of social media, Chris makes himself available on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and encourages dialogue with his 3000 plus followers. On his website, he has a link to the MANNblog, a personal favorite of mine. There are no assistants or PR people manning the MANNblog, just Chris. He updates frequently with brief stories and candid pictures about his adventures in L.A., all the big projects he’s working on and the time the Lord spoke to him from a chicken joint. His website also plays songs from his first LP, available on iTunes. I’ll admit, his soulful ballad “When The Lights Fade” is a frequent favorite on my iPod. He’s also started a Twitter and video campaign to get him on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show.

When I asked if he had any future plans to perform in Wichita, Chris said he would welcome any opportunity. I can’t wait to see where the talented Mann from Ta-Town goes from here.

Even with a book or magazine purchase off the clearance rack, we enjoy a full date night for under 25.00. – Tim Kaul

Walk the dog, go to the flea market on Saturday morning, then hit up the art museum for free admission! – Jessica White

There are a few go-to things we do for a cheap date night. If it is during basketball or football season, we hit Larry Buds to watch a game. It never fails – the two of us walk out of there stuffed and happily buzzed and we only spent $30. For an at home option, we have “make your own pizza night” and play music trivia in a homemade game where we use the cable music channels (e-mail me for a “how-to”). For the split decision – stay home and go out – we make dinner at home and then hit someplace with a good jukebox. We play all of our faves and rock out. Savutes, Barney’s and Paula’s all have awesome jukeboxes. – Jana Curl

We grab cheeseburgers at Southeast Carry-Out, then go someplace with live music and coffee. Alternatively, if we had to feed the kids before we left home (which means we’ve probably eaten, too), we might hit the west Borders and find all the books we want to check out at the library later. Oh, once again, coffee. Always coffee. On the extremely rare occasions that we’ve got the house to ourselves and there’s a good chance nobody will come home? Brew a pot of coffee, see what Netflix has sent lately or what we can pay-per-view, and cuddle on the couch. Turn off all phones. See, if anyone comes home, or calls, we’ll pause the movie… and never finish it, because we’ll be too busy being parents. – Stephanie Cloud Seery

Final Fridays. They’re perfect for blending in since buyers are the minority here. Plus, all the things to do and see will distract your
date from the fact that you’re avoiding the cash bars. – Brandon McPeak

We like anything competitive, so bowling or pool are usually our go-to cheap dates. On Saturday night, you can bowl an unlimited number of games at Northrock Lanes for $11/person after 11 pm. If we go the pool route, we’ll find a low-key spot and challenge each other to a marathon of pool. With cheap beers and 75 cent games, we never spend more than $20. Neither of us are very good, but it’s fun to try. If we want to stay in, we have Dinner & a Documentary night. We check out a DVD from the library or stream a documentary through Netflix (there are a TON to choose from) and cook together. – Shea Sylvia

Sometimes, when we want to have time to ourselves but don’t have extra cash for a babysitter and dinner and a movie, we have a date night at home. We put the kids to bed a little early and have dessert and watch a movie On Demand. It’s very casual and low-key but something we can indulge in more often than a full-blown date night. – Andrea Anglin

My boyfriend and I love to grab a bottle of wine and a redbox movie. You can find a good bottle of wine for less than $10 so it doesn’t have to be expensive. When it’s warmer, we also like to just adventure around outside in the evening. We love walking around the Keeper of the Plains area. It’s great on a crisp or warm night and good for people watching as well. – Liz Sothman

On my very favorite date, we picked up some ice cream from Cold Stone and headed to the park. While we ate our ice cream, we played on the swings and walked along the path. After that we played tennis and of course I beat him so that made it even better! We only spent about $10 and it was an afternoon of fun. On another date, we drove around all the rich neighborhoods in ICT and picked out houses that we liked. Besides the gas used in driving, it was a free afternoon spent daydreaming about the houses we’d never be able to afford. Rollerskating is another fun idea. Couple skating to “Red Red Wine”? Yes, please! We also volunteered and cooked for the homeless. It was morning full of doing good and making (and eating) pancakes. It doesn’t get better than that. – Carly Holmes

What’s your favorite cheap date activity in Wichita? Let us know in the comments.

The best meal I’ve ever had in Wichita, hands down, would be from Sabor. The slow-roasted adobo pork with a side of the orange garlic mojo sauce and the chipotle mashed potatoes. And let’s not forget the white sangria. I had this the first time ...

This week, we asked, “What’s the best meal you’ve eaten at a Wichita Restaurant?”

The best meal I’ve ever had in Wichita, hands down, would be from Sabor. The slow-roasted adobo pork with a side of the orange garlic mojo sauce and the chipotle mashed potatoes. And let’s not forget the white sangria. I had this the first time I was ever there, and now it’s my staple meal there. – Liz Sothman

Best meal I have ever eaten at a Wichita restaurant: Spaghetti and Meatballs at DeFazios. If I were on death row, this would be my last meal. There is no better meatball than at DeFazios. I could seriously make the meatballs my meal they are so good. Filled with spices and served on top of Pete’s famous, rich marinara sauce – you can’t beat it. The pasta is always cooked al dente and it defines comfort food for me. – Jana Curl

Dinner for two with my husband at Passage to India a few years ago. There is definately a shortage ethnic restaurants in Wichita, and by the time I discovered Passage to India, it had been too many years since I’d had a good curry at a restaurant. That dinner out, just the two of us, the good food, good conversation, the kitschy Indian decor and the Indian pop music playing in the background make it a night I will always remember fondly. – Karen Moore

While a friend’s parents were visiting from out of town, we had dinner at Chester’s Chophouse and loaded up the table with appetizers – calamari, ahi tuna and shrimp. For my entree, I chose the petit filet with mashed sweet potatoes. The food and the company and the bottles of wine passed around the table made for a perfect evening. I’ve had great meals at other Wichita restaurants too (Bonefish Grill, Red Rock Canyon Grill and Cafe Bel Ami all come to mind), but this is probably my favorite. – Shea Sylvia

My best meal in Wichita was fourth of July weekend several years ago when my wife, mom and I shared dinner at Yia Yia’s. Dinner was near perfect, which I’ve come to expect from them. I enjoyed a quarter chicken, asparagus and garlicky potatoes a bright and slightly sweet Riesling matched it all perfectly. As a finale to this amazing meal, we were treated to a fireworks display from our patio seats as desserts and champagne was served. – Tim Kaul

Curry, spring rolls and soup at Thai Traditions one rainy night last spring. Thai food is like my soul food – I always end up stuffed, but in a really good way. When my boyfriend’s mom came to town, we took her there one evening, and it was even more amazing than usual. (The fact that she picked up the tab probably helped.) – Steph Barnard

The best meal I’ve ever had in Wichita came from Playa Azul. I had tons of chip and queso, chicken and steak fajitas, and finished it off with fried ice cream. Muy bueno! - Maria Mannani

Definitely my most memorable meal is the maytag pasta at Red Beans Bayou Grill on the west side. Pure awesome. – Veronica Hill

My favorite meal ever is the chicken schawarma and pasta salad at Bella Luna. And of course no meal at Bella Luna would be complete without an appetizer of hummus and a glass of Reisling. Annnd… now I’m hungry. – Carly Holmes

The best meal I’ve eaten recently was at Thai House on West Street. Pad Thai and Spring Rolls…yum! In fact, their Pad Thai was so good that I spent the next few months learning how to make it myself because I couldn’t go there and get a fix anytime I wanted it. Now, I’m able to make Pad Thai and several kinds of curry… but I still LOVE that place! It’s never happened to me, but I hear that they often sell out of spring rolls on the weekend evenings – so go early! – Stephanie Cloud Seery

For our one-year anniversary my husband and I went to The Olive Tree Bistro and had a pasta dish with duck that was to-die for. I remember the meal being elegant and romantic and when I took my first bite of Tiramisu, I knew I’d found heaven. – Andrea Anglin

One of the best meals I’ve had in recent memory was at Abuelo’s on the Waterfront. Mexican is my favorite type of cuisine and Abuelo’s serves some of the best in Wichita. My entree was a chicken enchilada, which I special-ordered just a bit by adding sour cream sauce on one half and green chile sauce on the other. My side dish is always the Papas Con Chile because -HELLO – mashed potatoes with a kick! I also added a side order of charro beans (spiced, then seasoned with bacon and pico de gallo). Ohhh Abuelo’s, I’m beggin ya, please come to the West side. – Dani Stone

So tell us, what is the best meal you’ve had at a Wichita restaurant?
