[eat] Lunch with Liz: Sabor

16 April 2010 by Liz Sothman 3 Comments

Last week I told you all to go out and eat donuts for lunch. This week I’m back to actual food and am taking you to my favorite place to dine in Wichita – Sabor, located in Old Town Square.

Sabor has been a favorite of mine for over a year now. The atmosphere, food, and service are what keep me coming back for more. On this occasion, a good friend and I chose to dine fairly late on a weekend night. If you decide to make this your stop on the weekend, make sure to call prior to that day or even at lunch. It’s not uncommon to find a long wait if you don’t reserve your spot.

I have definitely found my food loves at Sabor and tend to gravitate toward them. My favorite dish to order is the slow roasted adobo pork with chipotle cheddar mashed potatoes. I typically choose two sauces for my pork – the orange garlic mojo and fiery habanero mojo. I love a little spice, and when you mix a little of the fiery habanero sauce in with the orange garlic you get a GREAT kick.

My dinner date had my second favorite dish, fish tacos (Tanya’s recommendation as well). The tacos include fried grouper with cabbage, cilantro, avacado crema, and tropical pico in tortillas, served with Latin rice and beans. These are not your standard petite, barely filling Taco Bell tacos. The dish comes with two tacos, and they are packed to fill your stomach. I usually share the order with someone else and order the queso as an appetizer. In the end, everyone is full.

Vegetarians, there are several options here for you to enjoy. You can also ask your server to make the tacos vegetarian style. We did spy some bacon-like substance in the black bean mixture and asked our server about it. Turns out the chef has just recently started putting bacon in the mix, so watch out if you are anti-pork.

What’s the fun in going to Sabor if you don’t have a drink or two? My number one suggestion would be the white sangria. And if you are with a date, or a group of girlfriends, I would highly suggest getting a pitcher (or two) to share. I’m embracing the summery feel, though, and went for a classic mojito while my date had a Brazilian caipirinha, which you have to say fast and roll your tongue so it sounds semi close to what it’s suppose to sound like. This drink consists of Brazilian rum, simple syrup, lime, and muddled pineapple. Her drink was made pretty stiff, and we felt a little like we were breathing fire after sipping on it. Our server took great care of us and had the bartender tone it down a little bit.

This brings me to the service. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad experience with a server or service at Sabor.  Our server on this particular night was one of the best I’ve ever come across. Devon was there to answer our questions when we found the meat-like substance in the black beans. He even went and chatted directly with the chef to get to the bottom of it. He also came back several times to check on us, in which we were able to bring up the strong drink problem.

What are your favorite Sabor dishes and drinks?

Wait, the strong drink was a problem? WHAT? That’s my favorite thing about drinks at Sabor – they’re stiff, and you get your money’s worth. They taste fantastic and you get premium alcohol. Two drinks a piece and my boyfriend and I certainly leave happy :)
