[do] Planning a Wedding in Wichita

15 April 2010 by Bailey Ketterman 2 Comments

weddingWeddings are memorable, historical, monumental events. At least to the bride. But it is her day, and it would do us all a bit of good to bow to her whims for just awhile. Want to help her out? Make a short list of suggestions that can be investigated in an afternoon and provide a range of prices. Below are a list of my personal favorites to get you started.

Where cakes are concerned, it’s difficult to beat Cameo Cakes (2403 W. 13th). They have a terrific reputation for pleasing parties of all types, and creating wedding masterpieces is one of their specialties. On a smaller, more personal level, Cake Affairs (555 N. Green) is run by a woman out of her home and created spectacular cakes and candies for my wedding at a very reasonable price.

Flowers are an integral part of any wedding, and can make or break your entire decoration scheme. Stems, along with being an outstanding interiors store, produces beautiful fresh arrangements that could stand alone as decorations at any simple or formal affair. My personal favorite, Walter’s Floral (124 N. Main St, El Dorado) is well worth the drive. Walter’s assortment of unusual and elegant flowers gives brides an impressive selection and is sure to please any taste.

One cannot forget, or overstate the importance of, the dress. I’ve been a bride and a bridesmaid, and for personal service and selection, I’m hard pressed to find a store better than Reni’s Bridal Boutique. Reni runs a tight ship and has everything a bride could ever need and more. She also provides a selection of bridesmaid dresses that fit and flatter any bridal party. Another option “in these economic times” (yes, I just said that) is to do the new frugal thing and rent your dress and bridesmaids’ ensembles. Tomorrow’s Memories (301 W. Central) specializes in rental packages that include every piece of wardrobe worn by the bridal party at very reasonable prices. For those of us that feel it’s a dress you’re going to wear once and then store for eternity (and those that know you’re never going to wear a bridesmaid’s dress again, no matter what the bride says) this is an excellent option.

Last, but not least, the venue is literally where it’s at. Botanica (701 N. Amidon) is possibly the most picturesque place to be wed in Wichita. But book early – their spaces fill quickly! If you’d rather plan the safety of an indoor event, The Grand Chapel (828 N. Broadway) is an amazing venue with endless possibilities for decoration. Also, the Scottish Rite Temple (332 E. 1st) is an incredible place for a party, with a gorgeous ascending staircase for vows and a ballroom for the reception.

Hopefully this has given you a starting point for how to plan your wedding (or get a bridezilla off your back) in ICT. If you have further suggestions, let us all know in the comments!

We really loved Stems. The flowers were gorgeous.

Cake Affairs makes a really tasty cake, and it was pretty, too. We didn’t have good luck at Cameo. The consultation did NOT go well.

And, if you are considering Scottish Rite Center, Dorothy, the event director, is super nice and helpful.

Cake Affairs is amazing! When I tasted cakes at the Wedding Expo I was getting bored – all the same. Then I ran across Cake Affairs and signed up immediately. Moist, delish and creative.
I was lucky enough to have my dear friends help out – Holly did my decorations and Michelle created amazing bouquets!
And if you are looking for a beautiful spot to have your wedding Eberly Farms is the bomb-diggity.
