[drink] Where to find Good Margaritas in Wichita
There are things I am not a fan of; balancing my checkbook (and the lack of adequate money to even justify keeping my account open), guys who wear socks with sandals and the Yankees are a few that come to mind. And then there are the things that I am a fan of; Funfetti cupcakes, “The Book Thief” and the ’80s are high on the list. But since this is not Facebook, I will get to my point, which is that margaritas always fall into the latter category.
Recently, however, an even occurred that put my love of margaritas to the test: The Milky Margarita Incident. You might be trying to figure out what a milky margarita is and trust me, I’m still trying to make sense of it myself. I simply ordered a margarita on the rocks at a local restaurant and then watched as the manager poured milk and tequila into a glass and then placed it in front of me. No, sir. Carly don’t play that.
After that incident I gave up margaritas for a bit and stuck to beer (something I knew couldn’t be messed up), but once the spring weather arrives, I knew it was time. Time to go back to my beloved favorite drink and once again taste the tequila, lime juice and triple sec. I am happy to report that I have enjoyed numerous margaritas to make up for my time away from them. The following is a list of places I’ve gone to get back to my margarita drinking roots:
El Rodeo- This place is home to my favorite margaritas in town because they are super strong and I don’t get any “Would you like another drink?” crap when I’m there. The waiters know to just keep them coming. See also: BOGO on Saturday nights.
Rock Island Live- Patio plus live music plus big margaritas on the cheap? Yes, please.
Felipes- Although this place is better known for their Flaming Consquelas (which I also highly recommend), the margaritas here are awesomesauce (yes, that is the technical term) and they never disappoint.
Los Cocos- Delicious cheese dip and huge margaritas; I’ll take “Keys to Carly’s Heart” for $200 Alex.
Jose Peppers- Pro tip: When ordering a pitcher to share with your two best friends, order it without the ice. You can thank me later when you realize that this means you get a whole extra glass of margarita. Just get some ice on the side and you’re good to go. And I do mean, good to go. Whoa, these are good stuff.
As you can see, margaritas and I have been reunited and it feels so good. I’m searching for more to try though, because I want to put so many margaritas between me and the “milky incident” that I forget all about it. So tell me, Wichita, where should I go next? Where are your favorite margaritas in town?

To be absolutely clear, BOGO margaritas are much different than good margaritas. While cheep, the Rodeo’s taste of tequila and watered-down sweet and sour. Furthermore, they have a margarita special nearly every night. While awesome, it begs the question of what exactly are they putting in these things?
Carly, you need to visit Cactus Cantina, 2802 S. Hydraulic, and have the flamboyant owner mix you up one of his. The owner openly admits his margaritas are the best, and most of his clientele agree. If they could combined the drinks from Cantina and the food from Rodeo it would be a beautiful thing.
Playa Azul makes an effective margarita that tastes pretty cussin’ good, if my memory serves me correctly. Been awhile since I’ve gone.
I recently tried the margaratini at Mort’s on 2-4-1 martini night. Aside from the obvious awesome that is a warm spring Monday evening on Mort’s patio, the margaratini was pretty damn good too.
Pro tip: when ordering a margarita at Abuelo’s, get the one made with Patron that comes in the shaker. It’s effectively three margaritas in one.
Cactus Cantina used to cater in lunches at my old job and the food was pretty good but I’ve never been to the actual restaurant. I’ll have to check it out and see what these margaritas are all about.
I think Playa has pretty good ones but they are a little too sour for my taste. After one or two though I’m always convinced they are the best thing ever.
A margaratini and spicy popcorn on the Mort’s patio sounds like perfection. I want to go there.
Louie’s Grill and Bar makes a FANTASTIC margarita. I believe it is called the Ultimate Rita and it comes in the shaker- Possibly my favorite margarita ever, and I typically don’t give the “favorite” superlative to anything. I think I might go grab one this weekend :)
A milky margarita? That should be illegal. You have to be careful with Felipe’s. That is where I had my experience with what I call “The Gatorade Margarita.” It’s just what it sounds like. I don’t know that it is actually made from Gatorade, but it tastes exactly like yellow Gatorade with tequila, on ice.
Needless to say, Felipe’s has different food and drink at their locations, some are better than others. I have had several bad experiences at the one on west Central, enough that I won’t be back. (And I’m one who always gives a restaurant the benefit of the doubt and will try it again, because, hey, maybe they were having an “off” night.) I’ve had several people agree with me that the quality of their food and drink has gone down in the last few years.
I prefer a homemade margarita to one that is made from a mix. Strouds does it best. Theirs is even better than any that I have had in San Antonio. Savutes comes in at 2nd place.
