[meet] Ask verb: What are your Favorite Outdoor Springtime Activities?

farmers market

Taking long walks along the river. I’m a total weenie. I hate the cold and I hate having to bundle up to go out. I’m definitely looking forward to a nice, long walk when I need to clear my head and maybe even get rid of that winter pallor. – Aimee Brock

My favorite outdoor activities are going on walks and having picnics. Going on a walk or a run in Sedgwick County Park is one of my favorite evening activities! – Maria Mannani

Once the weather starts to turn beautiful again, nothing beats sitting on the patio for Mort’s Monday 2-4-1 martinis! The after work crowd is especially lively. – Ashley Perkins

I love the EPIC games of horse that my daughter and I play at College Hill Park. We are both awful basketball shots, but it’s a time to spend time together and for her to ask questions about the minds of boys and all of the other drama that effects a freshman in high school. There are strict basketball court rules however. Much like Vegas, anything said at the court stays at the court. No topic is off limits and the overall winner for the day is Intergalactic Horse Champion until the next game. - Tim Kaul

I love people-watching at College Hill Park. All the dogs, tennis players, crazies, etc. come out of the woodwork. It’s great. – Steph Barnard

When we feel like being active, we like to head to Buffalo Park and play tennis. We usually always do at least one picnic in Riverside Park… and now we have bikes so we can picnic then bike through the park. For a slightly more indulgent activity, it is fun to find restaurants with patios and do lunch. Caffe Moderne and Uptown Bistro are our two favorites. There is nothing like sitting outside with the sun on your skin, having a drink and a bite to eat. – Jana Curl

Taking my pugs for a walk through Edgemoor Park with my boyfriend ranks pretty highly on my “Why Spring is Awesome” list. I’m eagerly anticipating the start of the farmers’ market season and garage sale-ing on Saturday mornings. And I have to second Ashley’s vote for 2-4-1 martinis on the patio at Mort’s. I love spring. – Shea Sylvia

Archery by far. There are several indoor and outdoor ranges, including the Diamond Archery Club near downtown, which features league play that’s inexpensive, with both spot and 3-D shoots. Add that to all the watering holes to choose from for bow-fishing, and you’ve got a wide variety of leisure and competition to get into. – Brandon McPeak

Now that spring is in the air, I will be looking forward to dining at restaurants that have patios. I can’t wait until it warms up even more to get my potted garden going! I also love just taking walks through the my neighborhood in College Hill. – Liz Sothman

Dreams of walks at Sedgwick County Park, pool crashing at various apartment complexes and playing tennis wherever we can find an open court have kept me warm all winter long. Now that it’s getting warmer and these dreams are about to become reality, if you need me I’ll be the cute one with the new pink racket. Fist pump! – Carly Holmes

Gardening. It’s time to plant potatoes if you haven’t done it already! Being able to get outside to exercise again, i.e., walking the paths around the Wichita parks or in my case, up around Cheney lake. Nerf dart tag with my son! Those velcro darts stick really well to lightweight fleece jackets, and the weather is just right for them. Win win! – Stephanie Cloud Seery

So tell us, what are YOUR favorite springtime activities?

These are all great suggestions, but outdoorsman in me is really frustrated. I’m looking for a place to go that’s a little more removed than Sedgwick County Park and a little more involved than the Great Plains Nature Center. Is there a forest, creek walk or some other kind of outdoorsy place in the outlying area?

Softball and beer with one of my teams. Coleman Hill, cheering on the Shockers – except for once a year when K-State is in town. The Patio to any decent bar, sharing drinks with close friends. The tailgate of my truck, outside of city limits, checking out the nighttime sky.

Jared, Have you been to Pawnee Prairie, west of the airport? It’s not extreme wilderness, but very large wooded area with a creek and not much traffic. It’s a favorite, local hiking spot for my daughters and I.
