[do] Planning a Bachelorette Party in Wichita

1 April 2010 by Bailey Ketterman No Comment

bacheloretteSomewhere between the scrapbooking party with your grandma and the phallus-laden shenanigans of bachelorette parties past, lies the perfect way to say sayonara to singledom.  While those both have their time and their place, I prefer to find a middle ground, or at least class up the crass festivities these parties are known for.  If you’re planning a bachelorette party, chances are you’ve got your hands full already; please allow me to take some pressure off with a few suggestions to entertain the bride-to-be.

I am a fan of an activity to begin the festivities – nothing gets a group of women together than alcohol and making asses of themselves. First, it’s the beginning of a beautiful baseball season; grab a cooler, some lawn chairs, and head for the hill – Coleman Hill, that is, at Eck Stadium at Wichita State.  From the hill, you can cheer on the Shockers, knock back a few pre-purchased beverages, and maybe make friends with a few other fans.

If you have an athletic group, or a bride-to-be in need of relaxation, arrange for a session with a private yoga instructor; I suggest looking up the fine people at Yoga Central, who offer group and private instruction rates.  And if you simply need a day of pampering, don’t underestimate the value of a spa day, which doesn’t have to break the bank!  Many area beauty schools will cater to your entire wedding party for very reasonable prices.  Bonus? You’re all exfoliated, waxed, and painted for the big day!

Before you get serious about your libations, I suggest you add a little food to the equation – you’ll need it later.  I love a place that offers great food, tasty drinks, and some extra fun all at once.  Margarita’s Cantina fits the bill perfectly; wonderfully filling food, ridiculous margaritas, and a little dancing on the weekends adds up to a great time even before the real party starts.

If you’d like to be a little closer to Old Town, Loft 150 caters to groups like yours all the time.  They even offer a lounge area upstairs with a separate bar to accommodate your decorating/screaming/singing needs.

When decorating, please remember my anti-male-member-merchandise stance. Balloons, streamers, confetti – all acceptable.  Party City stocks this stuff by the aisle-full.  However, when you’re in public, stay away from items that bear any resemblance to parts of the male anatomy.  Do I need to say anything about the cake? Yeah – not there either.

And now, for the main event.  The pub crawl is the traditional avenue for a bachelorette party binge-drinking marathon, and for good reason!  But may I add a twist to the traditional parade?  Bar golf.  I don’t mean ugly outfits and stuffy rules, I mean 9 “holes” or bars at which the bachelorette (and of course, her followers) must have a beverage so noted on her scorecard.  A little creativity will take this game to the next level, and Old Town is the best “course” in town.

Most bars welcome bachelorette parties with open arms; Finn’s, Heroes, Emerson Biggin’s, and Club Indigo all offer access to alcohol and the adoring men willing to provide it.  Add in a “challenge” to be completed at each stop, and there won’t be a “loser” in your group.

Bottom line – have fun and keep it (moderately) classy.  With a little planning, a bachelorette party can be almost as memorable as the big day.

What other avenues are out there for gal bashes in ICT?  Let me know in the comments!
