[eat] Lunch with Liz: Caffe Moderne

22 March 2010 by Liz Sothman 4 Comments

Cafe ModerneThis week didn’t go exactly as I’d expected, including my dining plans. I had a lunch date with a friend scheduled for Sunday at La Galette, located in the Delano District. But right before I arrived, I got a phone call from my friend: “So I’m standing outside La Galette and it’s closed.” This is a rookie mistake. Why didn’t I check to make sure that the restaurant I was very excited to try would be open on the day that I wanted to go there!?

We decided right away to check out what Caffe Moderne had to offer for us on a Sunday. Turns out, it has brunch! I’ve talked about how much I love breakfast food before and this is something that never gets old to me. One of my favorite things involves including breakfast food into times that aren’t necessarily breakfast-appropriate.

I actually hadn’t been to Caffe Moderne, tucked away in Old Town Square, since it was remodeled awhile ago. There is now a new area of the restaurant dedicated solely to brunch! It was basically like food heaven. One large table was devoted to salads, another for an omelet and waffle station, main entree, and a full dessert table. I, of course, gorged on all things breakfast and brunch related. Some of my favorites included the green bean pasta salad, smoked salmon, made-to-order omelet brought to the table, and the fabulous dessert selection. I could have spent a few more hours eating omelets if my stomach could fit them in.

Previously I have dined at Caffe Moderne and fallen in love with the atmosphere and cafe menu. While still in school, I spent countless hours drinking coffee and utilizing the free Wi-Fi. The menu is extensive, including appetizers, soups, salads, and paninis. There are also several vegetarian options.

Along with the food, there is plenty to drink. Whether you want a coffee drink or something a tad stronger, Caffe Moderne has a full bar offering a plethora of drinks for your tasting. And the gelato! There are normally more than 12 flavors to choose from in their gelato case. Several of the flavors are even infused with alcohol for a little twist. I can’t wait until the temperature starts rising to enjoy some warm afternoons with gelato in hand.

If you are in Old Town, Caffe Moderne is a great place to go after an evening out, for a drink with your special someone or for brunch.

One of my all-time favs in ICT! The coffee and gelato are scrumptious indulgences and the sandwiches are tasty. Haven’t tried the bfast buffet yet – will make a point to now. I love the atmosphere and the staff are always friendly, too.

I took my mother to Caffe Moderne over the weekend to celebrate Mother’s Day. I was looking for a place that offered healthier choices, along with having a bit of an Italian twist as she is going to Italy this year. We were very impressed with the cozy atmosphere and the great food that we ordered. My panini, called “The Isabella” was especially unique as I have never had green apple slices on a turkey sandwich before. It had a great tangy flavor, and was something very unique to me. After we ate our sandwiches, we both looked on impressed by the case of gelato and all the flavors available. We were given the opportunity to sample them, which made choosing a flavor a lot easier. Peanut butter was what we stuck with. It is so nice to have a place here in Wichita that serves such fine Italian ice cream, and offers such a unique variety of sandwiches and salads. The Caffe Moderne is a great place to grab lunch!
