[eat] Rediscovering Nu Way Cafe

18 March 2010 by Ashley Perkins 6 Comments

nu way“Crumbly is good.”

For many years, Nu Way Café’s slogan didn’t mean much to me. I had a couple of bad experiences there when I was little (I was a bit of a picky eater) and just couldn’t bring myself to give it another try as an adult. However, my boyfriend’s friends had recently been peer pressuring him to try the loose meat sandwich joint, and so I finally gave in to his pleas.

We headed to Nu Way last Sunday, and we were pleasantly surprised to see the sign out front advertising that day’s special: $.99 medium sandwiches with the purchase of a medium drink. It was already 1:30 by the time we got to the restaurant, but it was still really busy. Since we were having a late lunch, and we wanted to get an accurate representation of what Nu Way had to offer, we ordered several items, including three sandwiches, onion rings, curly fries, a garlic salad and of course some of their homemade root beer. We grabbed ketchup, mustard, Tabasco sauce and plenty of napkins, and prepared to feast.

From my first curly fry to the last bits of loose meat I devoured, I was mostly silent, but my mind was racing. How can these fries be so good? Why have I waited until so late in life to get on the Nu Way bandwagon? Why is my root beer glass empty? How can I make it full again?

The sandwiches were perfectly seasoned, the fries exceptionally crispy, the garlic salad flavorful and the onion rings were just the right kind of greasy and delicious. Needless to say, we left satisfied and kicking ourselves for not making this culinary journey sooner. I’m hoping this will become a semi-regular Sunday occurrence.

Hey Ashley – thanks for doing an article on the NuWay. My great uncle Tom and aunt Helen started the NuWay. My aunt eventually sold it later in life but it is still a family tradition for the Nicholsons. My mom is a die-hard and says: “you can’t put cheese or ketchup on a NuWay because that is not the way uncle Tom did it.” I love the royal malt too – the best!

Nu-Way is amazing…one of the true food gems in Wichita that I always take out of towners to when they visit. Thanks for the article and pub for the crumbliness…hope things are well.

And now not only do I want a Nu Way but I’ve also had the song in my head all day. Thanks for that.

Jana – Your comment really does make me want to rethink putting cheese on my sandwich, but I am not sure if Uncle Tom will sway me. My family has also been die hard Nu Way fans for my whole life. You can not beat the value; I am pretty traditional with my order – Med Sandwich with cheese, root beer, curly fries and side of chili. As many times as I have been there I have never had their garlic salad. Is it the style of Doc’s? Ashley great reminder to frequent our home grown companies and also a very impressive order!

H – yes the Garlic Salad is similar to Docs but more coleslawey. Uncle Tom hasn’t swayed my dad either – much to my mom’s shagrin he always orders it with cheese.
