[eat] Lunch with Liz: Lawrence Edition
Last week I took you to a few places to dine while I was on a weekend vacation in Kansas City. This week I’m rounding out my vacation mode (or “Kansas Staycations” as I like to call them) by taking you to Lawrence, Kan.
Lawrence is just a three hour drive from Wichita and also home of the University of Kansas. Several of my friends still attend school there and I always look forward to visiting them while enjoying some food along the way.
For those of you that know Lawrence, you know that Massachusetts Street, or as locals call it, Mass Street, is the place to go. For everything. Deciding on food is pretty tough on Mass Street. Do I want Asian, Greek, BBQ, burgers? It’s all there, and more. We all decided we wanted brunch, so we headed to the Global Cafe (820 Mass St.).
We all started out with regular coffee but wanted to be a little adventurous when we read the drink menu and discovered the Barraquito, a popular spanish drink that includes a shot of espresso, sweetened condensed milk, steamed milk, cinnamon, and lime. Yes, you read that right, lime. The drink is very artistic, served to the table with three distinctive layers and the customer then mixes it all together. It was delicious and the lime added a great twist at the end. Since first taking a sip of this drink, I have been daydreaming about it. I even contemplated getting my own espresso machine so I can perhaps try to perfect the drink at home. Until then, I guess I’ll just be getting it in Lawrence.
A special dish at the Global Cafe is the arepa. This beautiful creation consists of any type of ingredient that you desire sandwiched between South American style cornbread. I chose to build my own arepa, with egg, ham and cheese with a little green chile sauce on the side and also get a side of potatoes. The green chile sauce was an amazing topping to the arepa, making it just a tad spicy.
Another item ordered was the breakfast bowl, which included eggs, potatoes, cheese, green chile sauce, and some other unknown spices that made it very tasty. Another brunch eater had a different style arepa that included a chicken salad mixture squashed between the two slices of conbread. The greatest perk for me was the little side of fresh pineapple alongside my arepa. Little known fact: I love fresh pineapple, so you can definitely see how this would make my day, or meal.
Our breakfast meal at Global Cafe was an extremely tasty treat and so was the price. If you’re on a budget for good food on Mass Street, this is definitely the ticket, as my arepa cost only $3.50. There’s not much better than an affordable, great meal.

LOVE arepas and this place! Another good Latin spot on Mass is La Parillida.
I have been to Lawrence more times than I can count and have some definite favorites. Just discovered last time I was there – Sunday brunch at Tellers. Amazing doesn’t even begin to cover it.
If you want AMAZING brunch in Lawrence, you should go to Milton’s. It is beyond words awesome. I love the biscuits and gravy–they’re out of this world!!! There is always a wait at Milton’s, but it is totally worth it!!
