[drink] Signature Drink: Finn’s
I guess I should start with a disclaimer. I’m a Finn’s guy. I’ve been going to Finn’s for the better part of a decade. I danced with and kissed my now-wife for the first time at Finn’s. I’ve celebrated and grieved at Finn’s. Greg, the head man, and Jason, his steadfast employee, are great bartenders and hosts and are counted among my friends. So the idea of going on a Thursday to hang out and take a look at their signature drinks struck me as a fine way to kill an evening.
The bar’s new location at 131 N. Rock Island is an amazing venue. Up front, there are couches and plenty of seating to visit and get yourself seen. In the back on a Friday or Saturday night, the joint is jumping. The best DJs in the area have the dance floor packed, spinning great tunes and beats that you will still be dancing to in your cube on Monday. But during the week, the ability to hold a conversation with the bar staff and regulars or watch a game is the real selling point for me.
As you know from reading What to Drink When You’re Not Drinking, I don’t drink, so I had to enlist my fellow patrons to get a good idea of what each drink tasted like. Not surprisingly, I had no shortage of volunteers.
Fruity Pebbles – Maria was kind enough to try this run-flavored drink for me and reported that it smelled and tasted like the bowl of sugar that we all remember. The idea of getting that flavor started on Friday night rather than waiting till breakfast on Saturday sounded like a great idea to me.
The Bubble Gum Shot – Jason and the rest of my testers described this bubblegum vodka drink as tasting like “original Big League Chew.” Judging by its over-the-top pink color, I can’t imagine it tasting like anything else.
The Blue Motha’ Fu**er – This drink, containing most everything behind the bar, is Drew Heaton’s own. He said that he wanted to find a more politically correct name, but the original name stuck before he had a chance. My new friend Eric Busch described it somewhat more poetically: ”It tastes and smells like fruit punch and… awesome.” I didn’t think that could be topped for a description.
If you see me at Finn’s, soda water in hand, be sure to say hi.
