[do] Hang Out With the Gravity Slashers

gravity slashers

It’s probably time that I come clean about something. I’ve needed to confess this to you for a while now. I am a poser.

A hardcore, legitimate poser. When I find a fad I’m interested in, I get into it hardcore. It’s sad, I know. I shamelessly delve into popular culture’s current obsessions to see if I can swing it. I investigate enough to make myself believable in conversation and tweak my outfit so I look authentic, but eventually I figure out it’s probably not for me and move on.

So when I spoke with Keith Sayers, a motocross champ touring with the Gravity Slashers, I knew immediately I was way out of my league. He holds a ton of titles and sports several sponsorship logos, and I’m sure ESPN didn’t name him The Godson of Evel Knievel for nothin’.

At 28 years old, Keith has seen the world from the back of a bike. He’s toured all over the United States and ridden on international dirt more than once. The fans, the thrill, and riding in places like Shanghai are all reasons Sayers feels blessed to be making a living off of his biggest passion.

The Gravity Slashers go head to head weekly, showing off stunning acrobatics and hitting breathtaking heights in front of thousands of fans. The 10 riders come together at each arena to compete. As Keith says, “We’re all friends, but nobody wants to lose at the end of the day.”

And these guys aren’t just mere adrenaline junkies. They love what they do and take it seriously. Sayers has been doing motocross and extreme snowmobiling for more than 15 years. Every week it may seem to fans that they put their lives on the line in the name of entertainment, but Sayers explains that his sport is his life. He even had to prove to his parents he was serious when he started, by saving up to buy his own bike at age 9.

So ladies, surprise your man by skipping the chick flick and get in line to see Gravity Slashers at the Intrust Bank Arena on Feb. 5 or 6 at 7:30 p.m.  “The boyfriends might be more excited about something like this, but there isn’t a girl I’ve met who doesn’t find what we do interesting.” Sayers said. Plus, you don’t have to pretend to know the finer points of motocross to fit in. No research required.

Or bring along the kids. A family deal includes tickets, sodas, and hot dogs for four for $75. It’s a rush waiting to happen.

Get more on the action and meet the other riders on Facebook or Twitter.

So awesome I really hope to go to this. I’ve always been super impressed by the daring bordering on lack of self preservation that these people have. Who wakes up one morning and says “I think i’m going to take this 300 pound motorcycle and jump it 30+ feet in the air and then I’m going to do a no handed back flip.” I can tell you who doesn’t THIS GUY. But I’m damn glad they do and I’ll be there watching!

This is SO on my to do list for the weekend! My son is already hopping up and down in excitement! This sure beats the same ole’, same ole’ routine we’ve gotten into this winter. Thanks!

I cannot wait to see Gravity Slashers next weekend! Riding dirt bikes has been a passion of mine for years and getting to see these great athletes live will be phenomenal. Tricks like double back flips, Tsunamis, Hart Attacks and Cliffhangers will amaze all in attendance. Seven more days, Wichita!
