[eat] Where to Take Your Dad to Dinner

21 January 2010 by Veronica Hill 4 Comments

the anchorWhile most moms are all about the excitement of eating out at a unique or interesting restaurant, most dads don’t need cute and quaint. They want a good meal. If there’s something attention-grabbing (college basketball season, anyone) going on, they want to be able to watch it. If there’s not, a pool table, Mega Touch, or darts never hurt anyone.

If you need a place to watch the game or just enjoy the sports-bar feel, there’s A.J. Sports Grill at 29th and Rock. A.J.’s is a great multiple-man gathering place, as it has bowling, pool tables, and the signature 29-inch Superdome pizza. 29-inch pizza blows my mind. I’m not sure if I could eat a Superdome if it were all I ate for 2 weeks.

There’s also Walt’s Great American Sports Bar & Grill at Central and Rock. Open since 1947, it’s both time-tested and traditional. Lots of entertainment options plus 27 TV screens (including one in the men’s bathroom!) makes Walt’s another perfect place with lots going on so it doesn’t put pressure on you and Dad to have meaningful, deep conversation.

Staying in the Old Town comfort zone, there’s Whiskey Creek and River City Brewery. Whiskey Creek is a steakhouse that prides itself on making the best hand-seasoned and wood-grilled steak around. River City is a microbrewery that has many of the brews that Scott Elpers is so fond of. Heroes Sports Bar is a safe bet as well.

If you couldn’t tell, Delano holds a special place in my heart and will easily please the stomachs of dads everywhere too. A place for every taste, there’s Delano Barbeque Company, Mexican Café Delano, and T.J.’s Burger House. All places are open for lunch and provide an excellent taste of home cooking.

Is your dad a seafood type? Then swing by the Wichita Fish Company. It’s not known for the décor, but it is known for having the best fish in town. You can have any fish under the sea, as well as alligator, frog legs, and calamari.

A verb [ICT] team favorite is The Anchor. An excellent menu selection (with more than two items on the vegetarian page!), low-key atmosphere and awesome bar choices mean any father figure can find something to like. Or, if you have a little time to travel, hear Kris out on Cy’s Hoof and Horn in Sedgwick.

Sure, you could be one of those people who always take their dad to Chipotle, or you could be one of those super-awesome-favorite children who show Dad a new and different place every time he visits. The choice is yours.

This also works for brothers too and I’ll be using it next time my Bubba and I go out to dinner. Great list!

But if you do lunch… go to B&C Creations for their bbq buffet. It’s a hidden jewel of an eatery and very good!
