[do] Where to Go on a Mom-Date
Tension can run a little high when Mom comes into town. Is your apartment clean enough? Is your pantry equipped with the right ingredients for meals that she approves of? Sometimes having Mom over is more stress than it’s worth, like when her nagging about your financial situation overshadows the quality time you’re supposed to be having.
But you can’t avoid her forever! Need to get her out of your house and somewhere that distracts from the quarrelsome direction your conversation seems to inevitably take? I’d go with the logical approach, by inviting her to lunch (because clearly your job is too consuming to allow for a whole day with Mommy dearest). Here are my recommendations for the “Mom Date.”
- A shot of nostalgia, anyone? If you hit Old Mill Tasty Shop at the right time, it’s quite pleasant. Whisk her back to the soda-jerk days and make sure you insist she gets a chocolate shake. You’re always safe with this choice.
- Everyone loves an Old Town date, but there are more choices than Old Chicago. Maybe it’s my age group, but it seems like everyone always wants Old Chicago, Old Chicago, Old Chicago. If you walk across the square, you’ve got Imbiss Grille, a great German place; Sabor, classy Latin; or sushi at Hana Cafe.
- A really fun Cajun place on the west side is Red Beans Bayou Grill. The décor puts you right in the heart of Mardi Gras. This is a good one for mom or dad. The menu is gigantic, but try the Maytag pasta; it’s fantastic!
- A great excuse to go over the river is La Galette in Delano. The menu has Ham Cheese Puchette, potato Galette, Kibe-Hommos-Tabouli, and other noontime favorites like soups and salads. Like Old Mill Tasty Shop, it’s a breakfast and lunch-only place and is closes at 3 p.m.
- There’s a large fanbase for places like Cafe Moderne, Cinnamon’s Deli, and Bella Luna, all classy, mom-friendly places as well.
If Mother shoots down all these options, do the right thing and let her pick. At least you can say you tried!

The Cup ‘N Saucer on W. Central, just west of Braum’s and West St. is another nostalgic place. Small, but very sweetly decorated tea room with lots of tea options, soups, sandwiches and yummy pies and cakes…all homemmade. If she’s into antiques, it’s perfect because you can shop a bit after lunch. If you really want to impress her, do the afternoon tea, complete with all the pastries and such proper to go along with tea. Just make sure you call in a reservation and don’t be a jacka** and not show up. That costs the owner money.
I’m a fan of Old Mill Tasty Shop and I LOVE La Gallette. I’m glad to see them get props. I enjoy doing occassional weekday lunch dates w/friends at Old Mill and my sister at La Gallette.
I’ve never heard of this Cup ‘N Saucer. Thanks for the heads up, Jan. I’ll have to check this out!
Wow, La Galette is perfect for Momma outings. Very nice choices here. My mom and I also love N&J’s (Turkish coffee and Chicken Schwarma appetizer), Adrian’s, Nouvelle Cafe (tomato bisque is out of this world), and Bella Luna. All are Mediterranean, but very popular for something different. Also love Il Vicino. Really can’t go wrong for a lunch date — maybe a little too romantic for dinner.
My mom actually just left town. Wish this had run a week sooner! She does love La Galette, and takes the kids there every visit along with TJ’s Bugers. She loves Delano. I have also taken her to Red Beans and Cinnamons and Zoomdweebies(back when it was open daily), all favorites of hers. Next visit we will try Cup N Saucer, sounds like it is right up her alley. Unfortunately, her request for her last lunch here was Old Chicago, by Towne East. Must be a “mom” thing. Thanks for all the ideas everyone.
I second the Cup & Saucer. From the outside it looks like, HUH? Because it’s in an old QT and their signage is mostly written on the glass. But step through the doors and suddenly you are in another world where sophisticated women gather for tea. I took my daughter there on a date her first week of kindergarten and she loved it. It was all quite fancy and fun and the food was excellent too. Save room for pie. It’s worth it.
Also check out The Palette (& Fine Art Photography), just east of La Galette. It’s at 613A west Douglas, and it’s perfect for a mom date. Or any other date, for that matter. They serve breakfast and lunch prepared fresh. My favorite is the grilled meatloaf sandwich, and there’s a new soup to try every week. And do NOT forget to order a skillet brownie (WOW) for dessert. Yum.

Another great mom date idea is coffee and chocolates at Cocoa Dolce.
