[eat] Mmm… Spumoni

31 December 2009 by Maria Mannani 3 Comments

spumoniMany months ago, I tried an amazing new treat – spumoni ice cream. Spumoni is an Italian ice cream – the original Neapolitan - with three flavors, usually pistachio, chocolate and cherry.

After my first taste of spumoni, I was hooked. I was also determined to find it, buy it, and devour a pint of it. Incidentally, I have not been able to find it in a local grocery store. I Googled it, and found that even though both Edy’s and Ben and Jerry’s claim to carry it, I can’t find it in the ice cream aisle.

Luckily, a few Wichita restaurants do carry this awesome dessert:

  1. Mediterraneo (505 S. Webb Road) is where I first tried spumoni. They give you several scoops, drizzle it with chocolate sauce, and serve it with a slice of cheesecake.
  2. De Fazios (2706 N. Amidon Street) serves their spumoni ice cream with rum sauce. They give you a fairly large serving for only $2.95.
  3. Marchello’s (3107 S. Seneca Street) serves diners a large sundae cup full of Spumoni with a side of biscotti.
  4. Savute’s Italian Ristoriante (3303 N. Broadway) also serves rum sauce with the tasty ice cream.

So, Wichita, I recommend you get out there and try this delicious dessert. Not only will it change how you feel about ice cream, but it will make you want to buy pints and/or gallons of this stuff. Since I can’t seem to find it, maybe you can.

I’m not a huge fan of Savute’s but I’d consider doing illegal things for the spumoni.

I had some in Canada. I have to say, it was the only thing I ate in Canada that was really tasty. It was good enough to make up for the fact that everywhere else we ate was only mediocre.

In KC, MO that farmers market with the old paddle boat museam ( I cant remember the name) has an italian deli that has incredible Spumoni. It is on my list every KC trip. Reminds me of the spumoni we used to get at the old italian market in New Orleans when we went to visit my great-gramma Maggiore from Sicily. Delicioso!
