[eat] Toc’s Coffeehouse

Tocs Coffeehouse

To call Toc’s a coffeehouse is a little deceptive. 14-year-olds aren’t coming in to get frappuccinos and it’s not like some of the crowded, noisy hot-spot coffee shops around town either.

I’m not old enough to really understand “hole in the wall” or “mom and pop shop,” but from extensive Googling, I can say with confidence that this cozy joint is one of those places. Walking through the door, you step back a few years in time. Worn menus and well-used booths contribute to a “make yourself at home” environment. You can tell the room is littered with regulars whom the servers call by name.

This restaurant offers a well-rounded menu for each meal, although I must say it is breakfast-heavy, which is fine by me! They serve breakfast all day, which is one reason I love it so much. There’s a whole page in the menu devoted to egg preparations. So if you’re into omelettes (Italian, Spanish, Alpine), scrambled eggs, or a combination that falls into Eggs’n Things category, then you’ll be in heaven.

There’s an assortment of sandwiches, soups, salads, and dinner entrées for any taste. Dinner choices definitely reflect those home-cooked meals your mom used to make. Another cool feature is the Breakfast Bagel Buddies (I’m really into breakfast. College?) that has several spins on the tradition cream-cheese bagel. There’s even a veggie one topped with green onions, green peppers, tomatoes, cheese and, you guessed it, scrambled eggs.

One last awesome thing about the menu: nothing on it is over $11.50.

Toc’s is locally owned and has two locations. I like to visit the one in the George Washington/Harry valley. The other, newer location is on Harry and S. Webb. It’s open 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. daily. It’s not 24 hours, but it’s still an excellent IHOP alternative. In fact, it’s 10 times better if you ask me; I don’t know if they have an in-house DJ, but the background music is superb too. A great place to get away and talk, get away and study, or just get away.
