[primp] Cut & Color: Best Salons

8 December 2009 by Shea Sylvia 13 Comments

SalonMoving to a new city is stressful enough without worrying about finding a stylist. Every woman (and a fair number of dudes) wishes it was as easy as picking a salon out of the phone book (wait – people still use phone books?) and taking your chances. I mean, you can still go that route, but you may end up with hair so bleached that it’s falling out and an unintentionally asymmetrical bob. I’ve been there. The rest of the story involves a lot of tears and a new hat collection.

After a few hits but mostly misses when I moved to Wichita, a friend suggested Urban Image salon in Old Town Square and Carrie Jones, my awesomely talented stylist. She’s never steered me wrong, whether I was going long, short, highlighted, lowlighted, curly or straight. As a bonus, spending an hour in her chair is like hanging out with my best girlfriend. I hesitate to even publish this post because I’m afraid everyone will start booking appointments with her and I’ll never be able to get in.

So while asking for a recommendation from someone on the street who is rocking a fabulous haircut is solid advice, I polled verb [ICT]’s twitter followers for their recommendations. Think of it as a salon focus group just for you, the reader. Maybe this will save you from your own overbleached, asymmetrical incident.

verb [ICT]’s Andrea Anglin agrees with my pick: “I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to Susan Bradley and her staff at Urban Image!!”

Says KWCH’s Rebecca Gannon: “@KWCH12 ladies go to Planet Hair. Look up Jaime – she’s my go-to-girl.”

Liz Barrier-Winslow: “I’m sure I’m not the first to say Eric Fisher Salon, but Trish at the east location is THE BOMB!!!! She’s been at it for 15 yrs.”

Chandra Stauffer: “Joy Encinias – Sola Salon Studios on the west side.”

Former Wichitan Shannon Albert: “Colleen at Charisma was my stylist and I miss her so much since having to move. She’s fantastic.”

Jessica Mahler: “Took me two years to find a stylist I liked when I moved to Wichita. Stephanie at House of Hair in Delano has my business.”

Shannon Boone: “Cheveux Salon on N. Woodlawn. The stylists are fantastic & they’ve got the best massage therapist in town!!” Janelle King seconded this recommendation.

Lori Lohrenz: “Newly opened Salon Q in Old Town, next to Mosley Street Melodrama. Ask for Cha Cha, the owner/operator.” Katie Lohrenz agreed.

Matt Pankratz chimed in: “My wife loves Man Ha at Shine. Hillside and Douglas I think.”

Brent Reichenberger: “Planet Hair stylist @alyshanett. Can’t go wrong.”

Jennifer Campbell: “Loretta Holmes has always been trusted with my hair.”

Jordan Walker: “Don’t know if its on the list, but I love de’-al salon on Woodlawn!”

JD Patton: “My wife (@ictmissy) says to check out Nicole at Sola Salon off of 21st & Tyler.”

Jan Seawell Reckers: “Mandi Mitchell at Capelli. If you want an awesome colorist, especially red tones, she rocks seriously! Plus she’s a cool chick!”

Melissa Schnieders: “I really like Eric Fisher Academy. Takes a little longer but worth the price.”

I missed the call for reccomendations but it took me years to find someone I trusted enough to see more than once. I’m now with Lidsey Peck at Mary Kate and Co. I love her and she knows how to work with my curly and thick head of hair. And my husband is very loyal to Val at Shine. He’s followed him around from salon to salon in order to keep him as his stylist.

I have horrible curly, fuzzy hair, but I went to Mary Kate and Co and Sage helped me out with a really good hair cut and explained how to style it. Finally I have something to do besides buzzing it all!

I let any of the ladies at Evolve (45th & Maize Road) rock my hair..They make me feel fantastic every time!

Charisma is my go to place when I have money. It’s not that they are expensive, it’s that I’m a notorious cheapskate and hate spending money on myself. However, they are an Aveda salon, and therefore when you leave you smell DELICIOUS, so it’s worth it. The girl who cuts my hair there is named Jen.

Also, and these seem like really unlikely locations, but TRUST ME; hidden behind the gas station on the corner of Tyler and Kellogg is a little strip mall with a Mr. Goodcents, an insurance salesman, and a CostCutters. Now, normally I’m leery of chains like that, but my daughter looked like a mop and we had no other options for fast and cheap. The stylist, Sheila, did a fabulous job. She also showed us some products to prevent further chlorine damage at the time, and took the time to teach my daughter how to handle a blow dryer to blow out her hair. I’ve never, never, had a stylist help me teach a teenager how to use a blow dryer properly. Sheila got a BIG tip and we tried her again a month later. That time, she cut two teen girls hair. Still fantastic! Since then, she’s cut my hair a few times between trips to Charisma, she’s kept my kids groomed, and so on. There are two other full-time, permanant stylists there who seem to also do great work. This discount store is a hidden gem. If you are a west-sider, check it out!

I would like to add my “brand-new” stylist Hugh to the mix. He works out at Beauty First at 21st and Maize, and he is incredible! I needed a haircut desperately bad, and called and made a random appointment, and was lucky enough to meet him! he did a fabulous job, was very patient with me (had to bring the babester with me)and I left looking like a millon bucks! He even helped me carry the baby and my newly acquired shampoo and conditioner to the car- best customer service ever! if you are in the area, check him out, he is new to the salon and needs clients!
