G.I. Rose, on east Harry, often has a nice selection of men's pea coats. Yes, they are often the real deal. Navy surplus, sometimes, not our navy, and in terrific shape. I bought one for myself five years ago there, and it was terrific. I'm a short little girl-like thing, so this Scandinavian cast-off was just for me. On a man, it would have been thigh length, on me, it hit the calves. It had a deep hood, rare on American models, so my face stayed warm, and it was double thick. All that and a silk lining, too, for under $100. The downside is that by now, they're pretty picked over, so plan ahead and shop in August next year.
Can I put a good word in here for the charities? If you have a coat you don't want, don't wear, or don't like? Don't toss it! Every homeless shelter in town right now is in desperate need of winter coats! Send that ugly puppy to The Salvation Army, or United Methodist Urban Ministries, or if you just can't be bothered to look those up, drop it off at a Burlington Coat Factory. They will even give you a discount if you buy a new coat that day.
