[eat] Doc’s Steakhouse

7 December 2009 by Ashley Perkins 2 Comments

docs2I first heard about Doc’s Steakhouse a year ago, when one of my fellow teachers suggested it as our lunch destination during inservice. The conversation went something like this:

Teacher: Hey, want to go to Doc’s Steakhouse for lunch?

Me: Oh, you mean Doc Green’s?

Teacher: (Hysterical laughter) No, definitely not Doc Green’s. Doc’s Steakhouse.

Me: OK…

Once we arrived at the steakhouse, located at 1515 N. Broadway, it only took a few minutes of taking in the atmosphere and looking at the menu to realize why my colleague had laughed at my mistake. While Doc’s is a great place to eat, it is about as far removed from Doc Green’s as one could get.

Stepping inside the almost entirely wood-paneled restaurant is like stepping back in time, which is appropriate, because the restaurant has been around since 1952. The kitschy art on the walls and no-nonsense waitresses just further the sense of time travel.

Doc’s menu is simple, comprised mostly of steak, chicken or fish options and a few side dishes. However, the food is some of the most satisfying comfort food you can find. I’ve only been to Doc’s for lunch, so I’ve never ordered a steak, but  the sandwiches and burgers I have tried were really good. (Best grilled cheese ever.)

The one menu item that is a must-try if you make it to Doc’s is the garlic salad. The salad, made with lettuce, carrots, mayo and lots of garlic, is similar in texture to cole slaw. But unlike any cole slaw I’ve ever had, I would eat a big heaping bowl of the garlic salad and possibly go back for seconds. Doc’s is so well known for this salad that their website address is www.garlicsalad.com. Awesome. According to the site, the current asking price for the salad recipe is $700,000.

While it’s not an ideal date spot (garlic breath), I encourage you to give Doc’s a try sometime soon. And if you decide the garlic salad recipe is worth buying, I’ll split it with you.

I love the fact that you can order your garlic salad according to just how garlicy you would like it. I think they have the best Ribeye in the (316) –

I was less than impressed on my first trip to Doc’s but after reading your review I’ll certainly give it another shot.
