[do] Cheap Date: Ice Skating

ice skating

Maybe this isn’t so much of an informative piece as it is a public plea for someone to take me on this date. Is that too much to ask? I’ve always considered it the epitome of the perfect, picturesque winter rendezvous. I don’t know if hipsters ice skate, but expect a progress report soon.

An evening at the Wichita Ice Center is a great option for couples who are tired of the stale dinner-and-a-movie on Saturday and makes for an awesome, no-pressure first date activity as well. It’s light, fun, and romantic. It’s also a great place to show off your skills if you have any. Except if you do twist your ankle showing off a triple salchow that you can’t actually do, don’t blame it on me.

While you can attend figure skating competitions, hockey games, or watch speed skating, there’s nothing like putting your blades to the ice and trying it yourself.

Each month, the center publishes a Public Skate Schedule, but public skating is usually open from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. If you’re trying to save money for gift buying this month, good news: it’s also cheap! Admission is $6 plus $2 skate rental. Family skate hours vary during weekday afternoons. A discount rate lets families of four or more skate (including blade rental) for $25.

If you’re looking to go pro with this, check out the Learn to Skate class schedule. Sessions are available for adults, parents and kids as young as 2 ½. You can also book the rink for your office holiday party with discounted rates.

Pro tip from someone who learned the hard way: turns out ice is cold. Dress warmly.
