[listen] One Good Jukebox – Jimmie’s Diner
I love a good jukebox. The music changes, the prices get higher, records are replaced by CDs are replaced by digital music, but my love remains. This feature is designed to shed some light on Wichita’s best jukeboxes.
Jukebox #2- Jimmie’s Diner, located at 3111 N. Rock Rd.
The affection I feel for this jukebox does not come from an overwhelming love of music from the ’50s and ’60s. This is a case of pure nostalgia, but that’s not to say that this isn’t a good jukebox in its own right.
For those of you who have never been to Jimmie’s Diner, well, just drop what you’re doing and go. Right now. You’ll be greeted by waitresses wearing poodle skirts, the smell of great burgers on the grill and the sound of whirring milkshake machines.
I have lots of fond memories of the diner, including early morning breakfasts before grade school with my mom and some of the best malts I’ve ever tasted. I think these memories are the main reasons I enjoy this jukebox, rather than the music it contains. But, let me tell you about some of the things that make it special.
First of all, it has a great presence. It’s big and colorful and looks like it came straight from the 1950s.
One of the other unique things about the jukebox at Jimmie’s is the fact that there isn’t just one. Many of the booths have their own ‘boxes, so if you don’t like what’s being played over the main sound system, you can choose your own golden oldie.
Some of my favorite offerings on this ‘box include The Beach Boys, The Supremes and the Beatles. Prices are $.50 for one play, $1 for three plays and $2 for seven plays.

Do the booth boxes actually work? The last three times I’ve been there, I sat in three different booths and non of them worked.
Hmm, the last time I was there, mine worked, but it’s been a while.
