[listen] One Good Jukebox – Lucky’s Bar

20 November 2009 by Ashley Perkins 6 Comments

luckys_jukebox1I love a good jukebox. This feeling started early in my life, with the jukebox at the local Big Cheese Pizza in Park City back in the ’80s/early ’90s. I would save up my quarters and jump at the chance to feed them to that wonderful machine, waiting eagerly to hear the latest New Kids or Paula Abdul hit.

The music changes, the prices get higher, records are replaced by CDs are replaced by digital music, but the love remains. This feature is designed to shed some light some of Wichita’s best jukeboxes.

Jukebox #1 – Lucky’s Bar, located at 1217 E. Douglas

Truthfully, I don’t know if I’m cool enough for this jukebox, but I love it anyway. As the owner says, “It’s a doozy.” I think a good jukebox should reflect the spirit of the place, and this one definitely does. It is diverse, colorful, and none of the music ever seems like it’s trying too hard.

One of the best things about this machine is that people can’t pay extra money to play their songs before yours like they can with the newer digital jukeboxes. Sorry friendly hipster man, but you will have to suffer through my Michael Jackson tunes. (Well, unless the bartender decides to skip it for you.)

Some of my favorite offerings on this box include Otis Redding, Fleetwood Mac, The Hold Steady and the aforementioned Michael Jackson (and the Jackson 5). It also occasionally has offerings from local musicians.  Prices are $1 for 3 plays, $2 for 7 plays and $5 for 18 plays.

Never heard the one at Lucky’s…..but one cannot talk about the ICT jukebox scene and not metion The Chalets. Hard to beat, from Metallica to Miley Cyrus! You know what I’m talking about!

Why don’t I know what a jukebox is?

Great feature. Nathan and I are big jukebox people. Always looking for a place to go and hang out and play our tunes. And I hate that skipping feature! And just a side note for your future jukebox adventures – never put money in the jukebox at the Pumphouse. The waitresses always skip songs they don’t think are cool (which are usually the ones that I play).

Ashley – you are certainly cool enough! I’ll be sure to sing Jackson 5 at the top of my lungs next time at Lucky’s.

    Great Piece AP!
I am going to have to go with the stick and rudder @ savutes for a juke box that can make the most impact on a the bar – Walk in on any given Sunday afternoon at 4 pm and quickly discover that $5.00 in the juke and the crowd you thought resembled the lobby at Cochran, comes alive. The sound is awful but the songs are priceless – One tip when you have the crowd really rolling with a medley of classic country, punch in Gin and Juice, sit back and enjoy

H! totally agree – can’t believe I forgot about Stick and Rudder. Love it!
