[drink] Signature Drink: Boba Zone

boba2Drink: Boba Milk Tea

Price: $3.17 for a small tea (with tax)

It was pure curiosity that drew me to Boba Zone (2240 N. Rock Rd. #106). I wasn’t totally sure I wanted to try their milk tea because of the conflicting reviews I’ve heard from friends:

“You’ll hate it!”

“You’ll love it!”

“It will horrify you!”

“It will change your life.”

However, because I’ve long been fascinated with finding out just what exactly those things are that float around in the bottom of the tea, I decided to give it a shot. Turns out, those things are “boba” – large pearls of tapioca. I learned that you can get the tea without the tapioca balls, but what’s the fun in that? So, after trying samples of the Boba, Taro, and Honeydew milk teas, I decided to try the original Boba with tapioca. I grabbed my giant straw (to suck up the pearls, why else?) and bravely faced my destiny.

My take: Not bad, in fact, it’s actually pretty good. The tea has a mild flavor and is not overly sweet. I’ll go without the tapioca pearls next time, though. They’re described as having the texture of gummy bears, which is pretty accurate, but they didn’t really taste like anything and it kept catching me off guard when I would suck one up through the straw. Boba Zone has lots of other drink choices, including coffee, smoothies, slushies and tea without milk, so whether you’re feeling adventurous or just need a treat, it’s a good local spot to try.

I am so not a fan of the big balls in the bottom of my cup. We got one at the mall one time and my husband likes them. I can live without them!

My curiousity is peaked. I may have to try one. Sounds good.
