[nest] House Tour: An Oldie But a Goodie

Homeowners Molly and Kelly Korte were both born and raised in the Wichita area. Molly, 26, is a successful hairdresser and her husband, Kelly, is a 32-year-old server engineer for Verizon. They found the place by accident, simply driving by. They attended the competitive open house and fell in love with it immediately. After speaking with the real estate agent, they learned that it would not be sold to just anyone. It was strictly enforced that the buyers had to keep the original aesthetic and were not to renovate or make drastic changes to the layout. Between her vintage fashion collection and his affinity for antiques, this mid-century modern gem was a perfect fit. They closed this past summer.

Located in Rockwood, the original homeowners built the ranch style house in 1960 for $25,000. The couple designed it to suit their individual style. The Mrs. even installed a sidewalk outlining the backyard so she could walk around without ever having to leave the home. He a lawyer, she a housewife, they grew old together and eventually passed away in their home.

It remained vacant for two years before it was available for purchase. The house was sold with all the original blueprints. Some of its most unique features include an original accent wall charmed with gold leaf, a full mahogany interior structure, a vaulted ceiling, “Jack and Jill” bathrooms (blue for boys and pink for girls), and inlaid stone floors. So far, the only change the Kortes have made is to the exterior. Mexican beach pebble was inlaid between large square slabs of stained concrete to make up a textured deck and driveway. The oversized yard was also plucked and perfected, and now has a new addition of an adult-sized trampoline.

The Kortes admit to not having a fully furnished home yet. They are remaining patient to satisfy their taste in rare vintage furniture and decor. The house is sprinkled with miscellaneous items dating back to the 50’s and 60’s. Perhaps their most impressive prized possession is that of Kelly’s seafoam-painted 1966 Chevrolet Impala. It sits in the garage next to Molly’s merlot 1957 Chevrolet half-ton pickup truck, which is a work in progress. Upon completion of restoring the truck and putting the finishing touches on the home, she hopes to one day be featured in her latest obsession: Atomic Ranch Magazine. Until then, she’ll be slowly working towards properly accessorizing her home.
