[do] Cheap Date: Palace Theatre West

6 November 2009 by Aimee Brock 6 Comments

movieApparently no one told the dating gods that the economy is swirling around in the toilet right now, because a night on the town with your significant other (or semi-significant other) is definitely not cheap. So while you’re pinching pennies, we’re out hunting for the best ways to date on a dime.

One tried and true date spot combines kitsch and thrift in all the right ways: the Palace Theatre West. Best known for showing second-run movies, the Palace also runs the cult classics that you may have forgotten and the timeless classics that you couldn’t forget if you tried.

The Cult Film series features a new movie every week. It features the good, the bad and the just plain awful movies that we may or may not admit to loving. Sure, you probably own these movies on DVD, but nothing can beat seeing Howard the Duck or 2001: A Space Odyssey on the big screen.

There are some movies that you just have to see at least once in your life. The ones that stand the test of time and practically define the medium. These are the types of films shown in the Timeless Classics series. From Planet of the Apes to Fiddler on the Roof, these are movies for the well-rounded film junkie.

Sure, it may not be as fancy as the other theatres in town and there’s a pretty good chance you’ll get stuck to the soda and candy muck on the floor, but at $2.50 a ticket the Palace is a damn good deal. And in this economy, frugality is a turn-on.

I didn’t know about the Timeless Classics! Thanks for the heads-up, and great article! I’m looking forward to reading more of these “Cheap Date” posts.

    Good advice,
Laughing at old and/or goofy movies is a fun date!

Unfortunately, many of the movies played in the Cult and Timeless series are played from a DVD. DVDs are NOT meant to be played on screens that big, and they look horrible.

Occasionally they will use an actual print of the film (last time I saw one of those was Harold and Maude) and when they do that, it’s magical. There’s no way to know, though, if it’ll be film or DVD without going.

I’ve seen only one Cult Classic & it was probably film: “Flashdance”. When it came out, I was too busy to see it, and by the time I had a chance to rent it on VHS (or BetaMax, since that was my folks’ format of preference back in the day) and then DVD, it was hard to justify choosing it over all the independent or foreign films.

So 20 years later, I was excited to finally see it. I went with another 40-something, Amy Labelle. There were technical difficulties, but we acted like they were intermissions & used the time to reminisce about the 80s.

The Palace is nice for parents to take younger children, too. At a certain age kids refuse to go, a sign they’re old enough to earn the big bucks required to go to a fancy theater.

Nice post, Aimee. I look forward to reading more from you.

    Nice posting Amy!
The Palace West is one of my favorite date places.
It’s not just the $2.50 ticket price, it is also the concession prices – so much lower than Mr. Warren’s other theaters (BTW – in Wichita is it the-ATE-or or THEE-at-her?)
But I digress – at the Palace, I am able to save enough to be able to pay for a nice meal beforehand – sometimes I even Super-Size it!

    Keep up the good work
