[read] Local Blog Spotlight

4 November 2009 by Liz Sothman No Comment

Im blogging thisBlog, n. an online diary; a personal chronological log of thoughts published on a Web page. Blogs can be all that and more, though, depending on the use.

Douglas and Main: As an interesection of Wichita related blogs, Douglas and Main is a hub of Wichita blogging. Created and maintained by Bobby Rozzell, 52-year-old graduate student at the Elliott School of Communication at Wichita State University, D & M could be considered a cocktail party of the ICT. Rozzell takes blogs from all different categories and melds them together to create a diverse place to get information and ideas. Ranging from art, business, courts, Wichita Eagle editors, educators, entertainment, grammar, food, local media, to personal voice — you name it, it’s there!

For those new to the idea of blogging, Douglas and Main is a great resource for gaining insight and ideas on how to start and what to blog about. With the wide range of interests covered on this blog, it’s hard not to find something to read that tickles your fancy.

Young Professionals of Wichita: YPW is a membership-based organization geared towards young professional Wichitans between 21 and 39. If you are new to the area or simply looking to meet new friends and make some contacts, YPW events provide an great way to get connected with the professional life and community of Wichita. Their blog showcases different opportunities to get involved and also lists a calendar of events. YPW hosts monthly mingles which are free and a great way to get your feet wet into the organization.

Wichita Then and Now: Ever wonder what Douglas Street looked like back in 1922? Or thought to yourself as you were sitting at Mead’s Corner, “what was this like before it was a coffee shop”? Thanks to Michael Carmody and the help of Google maps, you won’t have to wonder very long. Wichita Then and Now takes snapshots from the Wichita Sedgwick County Historical Museum, Wichita Public Library, and Wichita State University Libraries and compares the vintage look and the modern look. Scan through the decades — as far back as the 1800 — and get a feel for some Wichita history.
