[watch] Wichita’s Top DVD Picks
Netflix has this nifty little feature called Local Favorites, which lists rentals that, according to the site, are being rented by people in your area more often than by other Netflix members. It’s not exactly a “top rentals in your area” list, then – because that list would look very similar across most communities – but a weird little microcosm of people’s interests outside the newest DVD releases.
So, what’s Wichita renting? Christianity, thrillers, old cartoons and little-known Jennifer Lopez vehicles. Here’s the top 10 from last week:
1. An Unfinished Life – I’ve never even heard of this movie, even though it stars J-Lo, Robert Redford and Morgan Freeman. WTF?
2. Diary of a Mad Black Woman – Both this and the previous title are from 2005. Apparently Wichita thinks 2005 was a great year for film.
3. Transformers: Season 2: Vol. 1 – One Netflix reviewer writes, “It was my mistake that I ordered this movie. I did not know it was the cartoon and not the movie.” Wow.
4. The Last Templar – From the description, it sounds like a combination of Night at the Museum and The Da Vinci Code. Wichita just wants the best of both worlds!
5. K-19: The Widowmaker - This film, starring local favorite Harrison Ford, dramatizes the other side of the Cold War. How open-minded of us to be so sympathetic to the Russians!
6. Awake - “Every year, one in 700 people wake up during surgery. When they planned her husband’s murder, they never thought he’d be the one.” I don’t even know what to say about this one.
7. The Proposition – It’s about outlaws. A Delano favorite, perhaps?
8. Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything – A staple of Friday night Christian-kid sleepovers.
9. Left Behind: The Movie – A staple of Friday night youth-group lock-ins.
10. The Covenant - A bromance with a supernatural twist. Rented by boys who can’t admit they love Twilight, perhaps?
